Sidebar Microsoft Edge gets support for extensions and web apps

Edge sidebar gets support for extensions and web apps. Microsoft is also coming three new sidebar modes that should further personalize the user experience. The company published instructions for developers to implement the features.

Microsoft in a blog post discusses the three new sidebar modes in Microsoft Edge. In a first mode, there will be a standard sidebar on every website. There will be content from extensions that will always remain the same, even when working in different tabs.

In a second mode, the sidebar can be activated when opening specific websites, after which a specific extension can also be loaded. The third mode makes it possible to call up a changed sidebar with extension when certain tabs are visited.

Microsoft writes that the sidebar is as flexible as the HTML pages that sometimes come with extensions, for example to set parameters. It will also be possible to set scripts and call up APIs via the sidebar. The extensions will be offered via the Microsoft Edge Add-ons page.
