Framework begins mass production of laptops with AMD Ryzen 7040 CPU

Framework has started mass production of its Framework Laptop 13 with AMD Ryzen 7040 CPU. The company confirms this. The manufacturer previously had to postpone production due to ‘electrical problems’ that emerged during the validation of its first AMD laptops.

Framework reports in a blog post that mass production of its 13″ laptop with Ryzen 7040 CPU has now started. The manufacturer started this week with the surface mount production of its mainboards in Taiwan, followed by the final assembly, test and pack-out process in the same factory. The laptops are then transferred to the Framework warehouse, after which deliveries will begin. The company claims to have doubled its production capacity earlier this year and therefore expects to be able to ‘quickly clear’ its backlog of pre-orders.

Mass production of Framework’s first AMD Ryzen laptops should have started earlier, but the manufacturer informed customers early last month that this had to be postponed until September. Framework said it encountered a number of ‘electrical problems’ during the validation of its laptops. The firmware from its upstream suppliers was also delivered late. The company said it sent biweekly updates to customers who purchased the first three batches of AMD laptops; those orders ‘were at risk of delay’.

The company reports that there are still a number of ‘oddities’ with its AMD laptops. For example, the WiFi driver of the RZ616 WiFi module used is missing. The manual contains instructions to work around that problem. Furthermore, certain expansion cards from the company affect the power consumption of the laptops. This specifically concerns the HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-A cards.

The manufacturer noted the same with its laptops with eleventh and twelfth generation Intel Core CPUs, but resolved this with its latest models with thirteenth generation Core processor. The company says it is working on a new firmware update that should resolve the higher power consumption with HDMI or DisplayPort card. Framework is also exploring ‘hardware options’ for a new USB-A expansion card.

Framework announced the AMD Ryzen version of its laptops in March. The upgradeable laptops can be supplied with a Ryzen 5 7640U with six cores or Ryzen 7 7840U with eight cores. Both chips are based on the Zen 4 architecture.
