Google is working on a feature in Android 14 that will allow users to use their smartphone as a webcam for desktops and laptops. The feature is currently available in the Android 14 QPR1 beta for select Pixel devices.
Recently the Android 14 QPR1 beta released for select Pixel phones and the Pixel Tablet. According to 9to5 Google the webcam app can be found there . The function uses the UVC webcam standard. Therefore, there is a good chance that many Android devices in addition to Google’s Pixel phones will support this option by default. Earlier this year the references to the Webcam Service function have already been spotted by telecom journalist Mishaal Rahman.
9to5Google writes that if users connect their Pixel device via a USB cable to their PC, they get the option to use the device as a webcam. If they select this option, they will see a video preview that they can customize to their preference.
Android 14 will be released on October 4. It is not yet known whether the webcam function will immediately be available for all devices that support Android 14. It is already possible to use an Android device as a webcam, but only with third-party apps. Apple released the Continuity Cam last year feature for iPhones and Mac devices, making it possible to use Apple’s smartphone as a webcam for MacBooks. This functionality works both wired and wireless.
