Samsung Display shows smartphone screen that can be folded 360 degrees

Samsung Display has shown a new variant of the Flex In * Out, an OLED screen that can be folded 360 degrees with one fold. This screen also has a new hinge, so that the fold in the screen should be less visible when flat.

The Samsung company showed the screen already seen at CES 2023 according to The Verge, but coming now with additional details on the foldable screen. With a Flex In  Out screen, the screen can be on the inside of the fold, as with current Galaxy Fold devices, or on the outside of the fold.

Samsung Display probably developed this screen with the idea that it can be protected when the smartphone is closed with the screen on the inside of the fold. For easy one-handed use, the device could be folded out and in again 360 degrees, with the screen on the outside of the fold. Samsung’s Fold devices now have a second screen for that, but with the new Flex In *amp; Out draft this would not be necessary.

The new screen also has a redesigned hinge, where the fold of the screen should get more of a ‘water drop shape’ when it is in the inside of the fold. That fold would be less tight than with the current devices, so there is less pressure on the screen. That would make the crease in the screen less visible. The company has not shared any photos of the display in flat condition.

Samsung Display has previously shown off a Flex In & Out screen, but this had two folds that could both fold up to 180 degrees, similar to the S-Foldable shown previously . The new Flex In & Out is Samsung’s first single-fold folding screen that can be folded 360 degrees in a smartphone. Samsung Display also showed off the Flex Hybrid at the recent CES trade show , a folding screen with a slide-out element. It is not known whether and when the Flex OLED screens will appear for customers.
