The Hole Pattern Behind Every Wall-Mounted TV
Buying a wall mount for your TV sounds simple until you’re standing in a hardware aisle staring at a box that reads “200 × 200” and wondering whether that matches the back of your screen. VESA – the Video Electronics Standards Association – created a standardized hole-pattern system so that mounts and displays from different manufacturers can work together. Without that standard, every TV brand would require its own proprietary bracket, and swapping a mount would mean buying an entirely new one each time.
The two numbers in a VESA specification – such as 200 × 200 or 400 × 400 – describe the horizontal and vertical distance in millimeters between the four mounting holes on the back of your TV. That’s the entire measurement system. Match those numbers to a compatible mount, and the physical attachment should work. But the hole pattern is only part of what you need to verify before buying.

How to Find Your TV’s VESA Pattern
The fastest way to confirm your TV’s VESA pattern is to check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s product page. Both typically list the mounting hole configuration under specifications, often labeled as “VESA mount pattern” or simply “wall mount.” If the documentation isn’t available, you can measure it yourself – take a tape measure across the horizontal distance between the centers of the left and right mounting holes, then measure the vertical distance between the top and bottom holes. Write both numbers down in millimeters, and that’s your pattern.
Common patterns follow predictable sizing based on screen size. Smaller screens – those in the 32-inch range – frequently use patterns like 100 × 100 or 200 × 200. Mid-size TVs around 55 inches often land at 300 × 300 or 400 × 400. Larger screens above 65 inches may require 600 × 400 or even 800 × 400 patterns. The jump from one tier to the next isn’t always linear, so measuring manually is worth doing even when you think you already know the answer from a spec sheet found on a retailer’s listing – those are occasionally wrong or outdated for specific model variants.
One thing that trips people up: the VESA pattern is not the same as the screen size category. Two TVs that are both 55 inches can have different VESA patterns depending on the manufacturer’s design choices for that particular chassis. Always verify by model number, not by screen size alone. A 400 × 400 mount will not physically attach to a TV with a 300 × 300 pattern without an adapter plate, and forcing the hardware creates a real risk of damaging the TV’s back panel or, worse, producing an unsafe installation.

Weight Limits and Hardware Matter as Much as the Pattern
Matching the hole pattern gets you halfway there. The mount’s weight rating is the other critical figure. Every wall mount lists a maximum supported weight, and your TV needs to fall under that number with room to spare – not right at the limit. TV weight is listed in the product specifications, usually toward the bottom of the spec sheet under “weight without stand.” A 65-inch OLED can range from around 50 pounds on the lighter end to well over 80 pounds for older or larger panels, so checking the actual number rather than estimating by screen size is worth the two minutes it takes.
The mounting hardware – the bolts that go into the TV’s holes – is its own separate consideration. VESA holes accept metric screws, most commonly M4, M6, or M8 sizes, and the correct length depends on how deep the holes are on your specific TV. Too short and the bolt won’t seat properly; too long and it can puncture components inside the panel. Many mount packages include an assortment of bolts in different sizes, but not all do. If yours doesn’t, check the TV’s manual for the recommended screw size and depth before ordering hardware separately.
Fixed, Tilting, and Full-Motion: Which Mount Type to Choose
Once you’ve confirmed the VESA pattern and weight rating, the mount type itself becomes the deciding factor. Fixed mounts hold the TV flat against the wall with no adjustment after installation – they sit closest to the wall surface, which gives the cleanest look, and they tend to be the most affordable option in any VESA size range.
Tilting mounts add a vertical angle adjustment, typically between 5 and 15 degrees downward. That’s useful when the TV needs to be mounted higher than ideal eye level – above a fireplace, for instance – so the screen can angle toward the viewer rather than projecting straight out. The trade-off is that tilting mounts pull the TV slightly farther from the wall compared to fixed options, which can make cable management more visible from the side.
Full-motion mounts, sometimes called articulating mounts, extend on an arm and allow the screen to swivel left and right, tilt up and down, and often pull away from the wall by a foot or more. They’re the most flexible option and the most useful in rooms where the viewing position changes – a kitchen where you watch from the counter or the table, or an open-plan space where the TV needs to face different areas. They’re also heavier, more complex to install, and significantly more expensive. A full-motion mount rated for a 75-inch TV can cost several times what a comparable fixed mount runs.
The wall itself adds one more variable. Drywall alone won’t support the load – bolts need to reach the wooden studs behind it, which are typically spaced 16 or 24 inches apart. If your stud spacing doesn’t line up with a convenient mounting position, a mounting plate that spans multiple studs solves the problem. For concrete or brick walls, masonry anchors replace the stud requirement entirely but demand a different installation process and the right drill bit.

Before You Buy, Confirm These Four Things
The decision comes down to four checkpoints that should happen before any money changes hands:
- VESA pattern: Measure the hole spacing in millimeters horizontally and vertically, or confirm from the TV’s official spec sheet by model number.
- TV weight: Pull the exact figure from the manufacturer’s spec sheet – “weight without stand” is the relevant number – and compare it to the mount’s rated maximum.
- Screw size: Check the TV manual for the recommended bolt diameter (M4, M6, or M8) and insertion depth to avoid ordering a mount kit that arrives with the wrong hardware.
- Wall type and stud location: Identify whether the wall is drywall over wood studs, drywall over metal studs, concrete, or brick before selecting anchoring hardware, because each requires a different approach.
A 400 × 400 mount and a 200 × 200 mount look almost identical sitting in a box. The difference only becomes obvious when you hold one up to the back of your TV and realize the holes are four inches apart instead of eight. At that point you’re repacking the box, returning to the store, and starting over – or hunting for an adapter plate that adds its own compatibility questions.
