Display Management Gets Direct Taskbar Integration
Microsoft’s PowerToys utility collection now includes a monitor control feature that places display adjustments directly in the Windows system tray. The new capability eliminates the need to navigate through Windows display settings or reach for physical monitor buttons to modify brightness, contrast, and other screen parameters.
This addition builds on PowerToys’ existing toolkit of Windows enhancements, which already includes window management tools, keyboard shortcuts, and productivity features. The monitor control function represents the latest attempt to streamline common desktop tasks that typically require multiple steps or hardware interaction.
Users can now access these controls through a simple right-click on the system tray icon.

Implementation Details and User Experience
The monitor control feature works by detecting connected displays and presenting adjustment options through a contextual menu interface. Unlike Windows’ native display settings, which are buried several layers deep in the system preferences, the PowerToys implementation provides immediate access to frequently modified parameters. The tool recognizes both internal laptop displays and external monitors, adapting its interface based on the hardware configuration detected.
Installation requires downloading the latest PowerToys release from Microsoft’s official repository or the Microsoft Store. Once installed, users must enable the monitor control module through the PowerToys settings panel before the system tray functionality becomes active. The feature supports multiple monitor setups, allowing independent control of each connected display through the same interface.
Response times for brightness and contrast adjustments appear instantaneous during testing, matching the speed of hardware button controls while offering finer granular control. The interface maintains consistency with other PowerToys modules, using the same visual design language and interaction patterns that existing users will recognize immediately.

Additional PowerToys Enhancements
Beyond monitor controls, the recent PowerToys update introduces several other workflow improvements. The File Explorer add-ons have received expanded file preview capabilities, while the PowerRename tool now supports additional regex patterns for bulk file operations. The Always on Top feature has gained new keyboard shortcuts for faster window management.
The PowerToys Run launcher, which functions similarly to macOS Spotlight, has expanded its plugin ecosystem to include calendar integration and system information queries. These additions continue the project’s focus on reducing the friction between common tasks and their execution methods. The FancyZones window snapping tool has also received layout template updates.
Performance improvements across all modules have reduced memory usage by approximately 15 percent compared to previous versions, according to Microsoft’s release notes. The Color Picker tool now supports additional color space formats, while the Image Resizer has gained batch processing capabilities for handling multiple files simultaneously.

Microsoft positions these updates as part of PowerToys’ ongoing evolution from experimental utility to essential Windows enhancement suite, though adoption remains limited to users who actively seek out productivity improvements. The monitor control feature joins an increasingly crowded field of display management tools, but its integration with the existing PowerToys ecosystem may give it advantages over standalone alternatives.
