A New God of War Entry Centers on Faye’s Journey Through the Afterlife
Sony and Santa Monica Studio have locked in a release date for God of War Laufey, the next entry in the long-running action series. The game arrives on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, and it marks a significant departure from recent installments – players take control of Faye, not Kratos, as the central character.
Faye navigates the afterlife of the gods.
That shift in protagonist is the most immediately striking thing about what has been revealed so far. Faye has existed in the God of War universe as a presence felt mostly through absence – she is Kratos’s deceased wife, Atreus’s mother, and the woman whose funeral journey set the entire Norse saga into motion. Building a game around her perspective, and specifically situating her story inside a divine afterlife, repositions a character who previously existed only in memory and flashback into a fully playable lead with her own arc to carry.

What Players Can Expect From the PS5 Release
The title God of War Laufey draws directly from Faye’s other name – Laufey – which was revealed in God of War (2018) as her true identity tied to the giant Faye, mother of Loki in Norse mythology. Using that name for the game’s title rather than simply extending the Kratos-centric branding signals that Santa Monica Studio is treating this as Faye’s story specifically, not a side chapter or spin-off tucked into a larger Kratos narrative.
The setting – the afterlife of the gods – opens up a part of the God of War cosmology that prior games touched on but never fully explored through sustained gameplay. The Norse cycle, which wrapped up with God of War Ragnarök in 2022, involved deaths of major divine figures across multiple realms. A game set in whatever lies beyond those deaths has enormous narrative real estate to work with, from the fate of gods like Baldur and Odin to the mechanics of what the afterlife actually looks like within this mythology.
No details on gameplay systems, combat mechanics, or whether the over-the-shoulder camera style from the 2018 reboot carries forward have been confirmed yet. What has been confirmed is the platform – PS5 exclusively – and the date: February 16. That positions the release in the early-year window that Sony has increasingly favored for major first-party titles, away from the holiday season crowding that defined earlier God of War launch strategies.

Faye’s Role and the Mythology Behind the Title
Centering a God of War game on a character who died before the first scene of the 2018 installment requires the developers to construct her personality, combat voice, and decision-making from scratch in a way that feels earned rather than arbitrary. The 2018 game and Ragnarök did extensive work building Faye’s legend indirectly – through carvings she left behind, through Kratos’s grief, through Atreus’s inherited abilities – so there is a foundation to build from. Whether that foundation translates into a protagonist players connect with over a full game is a different challenge entirely.
The choice to set the story in the afterlife also sidesteps a continuity problem that would arise from placing a living Faye in a timeline that players already know the outcome of. She cannot survive; the audience knows this. By anchoring the story in the divine afterlife, Santa Monica Studio avoids the trap of a prequel where dramatic tension collapses under the weight of known outcomes. What happens to a person – or a giant – after death, in a world where gods are real and realms are traversable, is genuinely open territory.
Faye’s identity as a Frost Giant, her long concealment of that identity from Kratos, and her apparent foreknowledge of the events of the Norse saga all give her character a complexity that the main games only gestured at. A game that actually inhabits her interiority – her reasons, her fears, what she did before Kratos arrived in her forest – has the source material to sustain a full narrative. Whether the execution matches the premise is what February 16 will answer.

God of War Laufey lands on PS5 on February 16, 2027, with Faye moving through the afterlife of gods whose fates, for players who finished Ragnarök, are already decided – which makes the question of what she finds there, and what she does with it, the only real unknown left.
