IKEA starts a webshop for reselling its own items

IKEA is testing a new online platform for selling the brand’s second-hand furniture. The service, called ‘IKEA Preowned’, is currently being tested in Madrid and Oslo. The test will run until the end of this year.

The platform allows users able to offer their used IKEA products for sale. Sellers can upload their own photos and set a price, with IKEA adding additional product information such as dimensions and the original retail price. The system also generates a recommended selling price based on the condition of the item, but sellers retain the freedom to set the price themselves.

A notable aspect of the revenue model is that sellers receive 100 percent of the selling price with a bank transfer or 115 percent if they opt for a credit at IKEA. To ensure seller privacy, buyers will only see an approximation of the pickup location. Sellers will also have the option to meet in a public place or at a local IKEA store. If the test proves successful, the company will consider expanding to other countries.
